Royal Whites
‘It’s a scandal!...I mean, really! It’s too frightful!’ That is how Shane Brox opens his story about Royal Copenhagen’s new series of white porcelain figurines, which has been dramatised and staged under the title of Royal Whites.
The series consists of 33 figurines plus a teapot and cream jug from the White Full Lace service. The figurines have all been taken from Royal Copenhagen’s heritage and cover a time period of several hundred years. Working in collaboration with Royal Copenhagen, Shane Brox selected a broad collection, which was then produced in plain white to make all the tiny details created by the modeller stand out even more clearly.
‘I’ve always been fascinated by porcelain figurines and what they signal. Royal Copenhagen has a long tradition of creating beautiful figurines and I thought it might be interesting to simplify their appearance and at the same time make them more contemporary by “peeling away” their colours,” says Shane Brox, who goes on, “I find the new balancing act between the maximalism and minimalism of the figurines interesting and the combination makes an exotic, strange, beautiful and quirky impression that sets stories off in the observer’s head.’
The Royal Whites series represents a modernisation of the classic porcelain figurines, enabling them to play an even greater part in the contemporary context of interior design 2008 style. Drama is being generated around the figurines, making them three-dimensional narratives that will captivate the observer in an instant.
‘What to do? What to do?…One is speechless!” the teapot whispers excitedly to the majestic cat in Shane Brox’s dramatisation of the royal porcelain figurines. Could they be talking about their new all-white look?
