The porcelain is hand-painted with underglaze, which means that the decoration is hand-painted before the frame part is glazed and fired. This provides a durable finish which ensures that the decorations are sealed under the glaze and thus cannot fade or be damaged with use.

  • Machine washable.
  • Microwave safe if the porcelain has reached room temperature before. Avoid sudden temperature fluctuations.
NB! Does not apply to frame parts with metal components.
  • Tolerates freezing, but sudden large temperature fluctuations must be avoided during freezing/thawing.

Ovenproof dishes from Royal Copenhagen can tolerate up to 230 degrees celcius. Be aware of the information below.

  • Allow ovenware taken from a refrigerator to sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before placing it in a hot oven.
  • Keep ovenware at least 10 cm from the oven grill
  • The base of the dish should be at least 50 % covered with liquid or food while cooking
  • Do not expose ovenware to a naked flame such as a gas hob or grill
  • Do not place ovenware straight from a hot oven and onto unprotected, cold or wet surfaces.
  • Always ware oven mitts and proceed with care when handling hot ovenware

We often get inquiries from people who have become worried about whether they can eat on their Christmas plates.
Christmas plates were originally made as decorative and collector's items, but it was also intended that they could be used as ordinary plates. To this day it is done to a large extent - for example in Japan.
Christmas plates have always been made from the same materials, i.e. mass, glaze and color, such as our underglaze-decorated plates, for example Blue Mega Fluted, Blue Fluted, Seagull.
In all years, we have complied - and continue to do so - with the authorities' requirements regarding the product's contact with food. Special underglaze decorated items such as Plaquette, Blue Mega Fluted, Blue Fluted and the like are completely resistant to contact with all materials – including food.

The porcelain is hand-painted with underglaze, which means that the decoration is hand-painted on the glazed porcelain, after which the frame part is fired again at high heat. This provides a durable finish which ensures that the porcelain can be machine washed. The inglaze method is necessary to achieve that color.

The porcelain is made of bone china and with gold decorations. Due to the gold decorations, we advise against machine washing the frame if it is used on a daily basis. We also advise against using a scouring sponge when washing dishes by hand, as this can wear on the gold edge.

  • Machine washing is not recommended, as it can wear off the gold decoration.
  • NOT microwave safe due to the frame's gold decoration.
  • Tolerates freezing, but sudden large temperature fluctuations must be avoided during freezing/thawing.

The porcelain is hand-painted with overglaze, which is the most complicated decoration method for porcelain, as it requires several firings and each time the porcelain is fired it risks cracking.

  • Not machine washable.
  • Not microwave safe.
  • Cannot withstand heating in an oven.
  • Cannot tolerate freezing.
Fluted Contrast is not a thermal mug, but rather a regular mug with a decorative silicone casing, which can insulate against the heat.

The mug will get hot on the outside, and the insulating ability cannot be compared to that of a thermal mug. It can be compared to a mug or a cup without a handle. If the mug feels too hot to hold, fill the mug with slightly less hot liquid and hold the top of the mug.

The fluted Contrast mug's silicone casing is not glued to the porcelain, as this would result in impractical transitions between silicone and porcelain, which cannot be completely cleaned and will therefore be unhygienic. Therefore, the silicone is mounted "loosely" on the outside of the porcelain, so that it can be removed when it is washed.

When the mug is washed in a dishwasher, the silicone becomes loose due to the heat and water can seep under it. When the machine has finished washing and the mugs become cold again, the silicone contracts and traps the water between the silicone and the porcelain.

We recommend washing the porcelain and silicone separately. The silicone may seem difficult to remove until you have found the right technique. Therefore, it may be easier to wash the mug with silicone on it, take the mug out of the dishwasher while it is hot, and remove the silicone while it is slightly loose due to the heat. The two parts are allowed to dry separately before the silicone is put back on, and the mug is ready for use again.

When washing dishes in the machine as well as during normal use, a thin layer of soap residue and grease can settle on the surface of the silicone part. Since the silicone is matte, there are a lot of microscopic bumps in the surface where this soap/grease can get stuck.

A possible solution to this problem could be to clean the silicone by hand using a scouring sponge and dish washing liquid with a little acid added, e.g. household vinegar or acetic acid. This removes this layer of grease and grime, and grease will not settle in the silicone. Of course, it is not something that needs to be repeated every time the mugs are washed. Our experience is that if this is done just once, the grease should not reappear.

The top, the suspension on Royal Copenhagen's Easter Egg, can tarnish under various circumstances. This means that, like silverware, it can have a slightly tarnished appearance. This can be removed, but one must be careful. This is a very thin silver coating, and care must be taken not to damage this. We recommend polishing the top with a soft cotton cloth, which is sufficient to remove the tarnish and not the silver layer itself.

The small ring that sits at the top of the Easter Egg is put on by hand. It can occur that the small ring has not been clamped properly. This can mean that the ribbon can slip out of the ring and that the eggs can fall to the ground and break. Therefore, it is advisable to give the ring an extra squeeze and make sure that there is no gap through which the ribbon can escape.

Discontinued collections

Both collections are created with a matte colored glaze. Marks from daily use like scratches and cutlery rub-off are patina, which cannot be avoided.

The matte glazed surface is easier affected by the use of knives, forks, spoons etc. than a shiny smooth glaze. Scratches cannot be removed whereas dark cutlery marks can partly be removed with a household polishing sponge and /or some polishing detergent. Scratches can also occur, when the plates are stacked and then scrape against each other. We recommend stacking with a napkin between the plates.

The Zodiac figurines (both black and white) and the Daisy Bonbonniere are made in bisquit porcelain, which means that they are fired to zero porosity and without glaze. Normally you put on a layer of glaze on the porcelain; this is done from an aesthetic point of view, because the glaze layer is very smooth, and it does not respond to dirt and is very easy to clean.

A bisquit fired item behave a bit different than glazed items. It has a slight rough surface, which makes it receptive to dirt.

The black figurines are also receptive to contact marks from other materials such as paper, cardboard, dry cloths etc. which will give dry, white areas. In general for both types; they can be washed with different detergents, which can remove dirt and white areas. But one should be very careful during washing, since there are a lot of thin, fragile areas than can be damaged.

After a thorough cleaning, the rough surface will need a small amount of grease to keep a homogeneous appearance. Do not add too much so it will become shiny, but just enough for the surface to appear homogeneous again. Different kind of grease can be used, e.g. normal hand creme or something alike. A little amount of creme is added to a cloth and lightly scattered over the whole figurine. Then the piece is wiped of, and you will be able to see a good result right away.
