As Above, So Below

In colourful, profound expressions, sculptor and artist Klara Lilja plays with eternal themes of nature in this explorative creative collaboration. Working closely with Royal Copenhagen’s skilled craftsmen, 25 numbered art platters have been created by hand in a process that has united the raw wildness of Klara Lilja with the perfectionism of the porcelain factory’s artists; an untamed yet poetic style caught in a refined world.

Royal Copenhagen’s artistic heritage

Each work is made up of numerous meticulously handmade items, pieced together to communicate an organic narrative of flora and fauna with historical references to Royal Copenhagen’s artistic heritage; alongside starfish and butterflies, snails and flowers add an enchanting dimension. Three different editions have been crafted – Ocean, Land and Air – however no two platters are the same. With an alchemistic approach to glazes that is deeply rooted in both Klara Lilja’s practice and the history of the porcelain factory, a rainbow of colours breathes life into the art platters, conjuring up a unique appearance for each piece.

Ocean – Art Platter

‘Ocean was the first of the art platters that I made, and the first one I visualized. The ocean is where life first began and in the same way this platter tells the first part of the collective story,’ says Klara Lilja.

Ocean – Art Platter - 8 editions

The Ocean art platters feature starfish, snail shells and fish eggs, poised on top of a mesmerizing blue background. As with all glazes used for the art platters, the blue crystal glaze is Klara’s own. Adapting it to the delicate porcelain and the temperatures used for burning required extensive expertise and know-how by the porcelain factory’s craftsmen.

Width: 33 cm

Weight: Approx 2,7 to 3,0 kilo (varies because platter and the hand modelled decorations on each artwork differs in composure of the porcelain mass)

Land - Art Platter

‘The Land art platter represents the next step in the evolution of life,’ says Klara Lilja. ‘From the ocean, creatures crawl onto land and life develops. The snails on this art platter are inspired by a classic Royal Copenhagen component, but here they are no longer alone, they are close and they are touching. With this piece I wanted to go all in on minimizing distance and loading elements onto the surface – more is more, as was the case with the splendid platters from 16th century France that were my initial inspiration.’

Every single component of the art platters is created and glazed by hand, and the Royal Copenhagen craftsmen collaborated closely with Klara Lilja on every detail, making sure the final pieces were as envisioned. The colour of the topmost starfish on the Land platter required multiple attempts before the perfect shade of coral was achieved.

Width: Approx. 35 – 37 cm (width depending on the placement of leaf decorations extending the surface of the platter)

Weight: 2,9 – 3,1 kilos (varies because platter and the hand modelled decorations on each artwork differs in composure of the porcelain mass)

Land - Art Platter

The white crystal glaze of the Air platter beautifully symbolizes the clouds around the airborne creatures that adorn it, surrounded by Klara Lilja’s signature pink. While the dragonflies were initially created by one of Royal Copenhagen’s skilled craftsmen with 50 years’ experience, the butterflies are a key component across Klara Lilja’s work.

Land - Art Platter - 9 editions

‘I have always loved butterflies, and I even used to breed them. When the caterpillar finally turns into a butterfly, it is actually the final stage of its life; they only live for one season. This art platter is the great fireworks right before the end,’ Klara Lilja explains.

Width: Between 35 - 36,5 cm (width depending on the placement of leaf decorations extending the surface of the platter)

Weight: 2,3 – 2,4 kilo (varies because platter and the hand modelled decorations on each artwork differs in composure of the porcelain mass)
