For the 61st year in a row, Royal Copenhagen is opening its doors to the annual Christmas exhibition, which this year presents an exciting mix of art installations and table settings that celebrate the magic of creating something for yourself and the joy of using both your hands and your imagination.
Three colourful artistic personalities, who all work in the crossover between art and craftmanship, have created their own inspiring Christmas universe. Each of them share their holiday dreams and the traditions they have either brought with them or established for themselves.
Guests are invited into artistic displays of the Christmas table, which in the hands of floral-, room- and object designer Julius Værnes Iversen, paper artist Veronica Hodges and artist, florist and author Poppykalas takes on a whimsical, colourful, nostalgic, modern and classic expression. With widely different tools – but with a floral element in common – the artists have added an extra magical dimension to the holiday with three themed Christmas installations: Contemporary, Explorative and Heritage.
Julius Værnes Iversen (b. 1989). Founder and creative director of TABLEAU – a creative studio focused on art, design, botany and spatial design. Aims to establish a new aesthetic where the boundaries between disciplines are dissolved.
Poppykalas, alias Thilde Maria Haukohl Kristensen (b. 1979). Visual artist, florist and author. Internationally renowned for her original floral decorations. Author of the book Poppykalas and the Magical Flowers.
Veronica Hodges (b. 1972). Paper artist. Trained in fashion and set design. Now an internationally recognized artist known for creating artworks and large-scale installations from paper.
Alongside the opening of this year’s Christmas exhibition, guests can enjoy a newly completed re-designed ground floor in Royal Copenhagen’s Flagship Store. In celebration of the porcelain factory’s 250-year anniversary in 2025, a new chapter has been created for experiences and communicating the company’s porcelain, art and craft. The historical store, which has housed Royal Copenhagen since 1911, has been re-imagined with a sensuous and tactile interior that respectfully converses with the beautiful protected building, which dates back to 1616.
For the renovation, Royal Copenhagen collaborated with architects Mentze Ottenstein. Through innovative ideas and respect for the soul of the building and vital parts of Royal Copenhagen’s DNA, a modern experiential universe has been created. The newly established surroundings includes details, colour and materials that reflect different stages of porcelain making such as plaster molds, liquid porcelain and glaze. Specially designed porcelain has been integrated into furniture surfaces, and the interior references the molds of the porcelain factory.
Royal Copenhagen’s iconic logo, the three waves, which has adorned the porcelain since 1775, is recreated in brass detailing and interior ornaments. Along with new display cases and furniture in European cherry, designed by Mentze Ottenstein, an elegant and light setting has been created for a story that looks back in time while also reaching towards the future.
Royal Copenhagen’s Christmas exhibition first took place in 1963. Every year since then, new contributors from the arts and culture scene have set their own unique tables for Christmas. The exhibition can be experienced from 15. November to 31. December 2024 on the 1st floor at Amagertorv 6.
